Home and Away: Imps equal to Owls

Hello, and welcome to ‘Home and Away,’ a series of features where I present to you a new experience of football. I am Ryan a student at Carre’s Grammar School in Sleaford – as well as a life-long Lincoln City fan.

In this weeks feature we are going to look at some prominent off-the-pitch news, a ground review of Hillsborough and a summary of Sheffield Wednesday Away. However, let’s start with some history surrounding Sheffield Wednesday and their ground.

Sheffield Wednesday were founded in 1867- making them the second oldest professional association football club in England. Most of Wednesday’s league history was spent in the top flight of English football and in 1992 they became founder members of the Premier League, however The Owls have not seen the Premier League since relegation in 2000.

Sheffield Wednesday play their football at Hillsborough and have done since 1899. On 15 April 1989, 97 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final againstNottingham Forest. To this day, what became known as the Hillsborough Disaster has the highest death toll in British sporting history. Hillsborough has a capacity of 39,732.

This week, Jack Diamond’s loan with Lincoln City has been terminated with immediate effect and he has been suspended by Sunderland. Criminal charges have been brought against Jack Diamond and he is due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in May.

Hillsborough is a very old fashioned ground with a rather unusual design. The Away End is alright, my main issue being the size of the entrance out onto the stand, it takes so long to get out of the stand at half-time and full-time. The food and drink choice is limited and very expensive at best.

In terms of the game, it was a fantastic performance from The Imps; after going 1-0 down there was so much determination to get back into the game. After a fantastic tackle, Sheffield United loanee, Harry Boyes, dribbles halfway across the pitch to have his shot parried right at Danny Mândroiu’s feet, from there it is as simple as sticking the ball in the net. There was visual improvement within the squad and today the fans were the 12th man, really helping to boost the team. All in all it was a very pleasing result and a very good point to take back to Lincoln.

Next week Lincoln face Cheltenham Town at home and you can expect a full match review and weekly update from my end.
